Herefordshire Council has submitted a funding bid to secure a permanent replacement for the Burcott Road footbridge, as ongoing structural issues continue to cause local traffic disruption.

The footbridge, also referred to as the College Road footbridge, has been closed since May following safety concerns. The closure forced pedestrians onto the adjacent road bridge, where temporary traffic lights reduced vehicle traffic to a single lane to accommodate walkers and cyclists.

To ease congestion and improve safety, the council confirmed that a new one-way traffic system will replace the temporary traffic lights from the start of September. Additional protective barriers will also be installed to separate pedestrians and cyclists from motor vehicles using the temporary route.

College ward Councillor Ben Proctor noted that the temporary arrangement remains difficult for many residents, particularly disabled pedestrians, but acknowledged that local sentiment favours the upcoming operational change.

"I think many local people think that change can't come soon enough. It should alleviate congestion in the area," Cllr Proctor said. "Though it will also cause inconvenience for local people getting back from town to their houses, I think most people think the trade-off will be worth it."

Cllr Proctor added: "I understand the council is working on a plan to repair or replace the pedestrian bridge. I realise that is complicated and going to take some time, but local people really want to see that plan as soon as possible."

Engineers began site investigations in June to establish whether the existing structure can be repaired or requires a complete rebuild. Early design work is already underway to allow construction to start promptly once a final decision is reached.

A spokesperson for Herefordshire Council confirmed: "A funding bid has also been submitted to support the replacement of the College Road footbridge and restore a safe, dedicated pedestrian and cycle route."

The council emphasized that the interim traffic arrangements are necessary to maintain public safety while permanent plans and funding are finalized, thanking local residents for their ongoing patience.
